WORDS LIKE SOUNDS – documentary film, dir. Jan Sosiński
Composed and performed by Agata Zubel, the opera Bildbeschreibung (Description of a Picture) for two voices, instrumental ensemble and electronics was written to the text of an experimental drama by Heiner Müller. The text is in fact just one sentence, extending over eight pages of print, which uses an apparently trivial representation of persons and objects to ask existential questions and suggest far-from-easy answers. The Polish premiere took place at the 2018 ‘Warsaw Autumn’. The composer (here as singer-soloist) was joined on the stage by excellent baritone Frank Wörner and ensemble Klangforum Wien under Titus Engel. This is the performance we can now see on the record in the ANAKLASIS series, along with the documentary Words Like Sounds, which is a portrait of Agata Zubel presented in her double capacity as composer and performer. The film follows her brilliant achievements in both these roles.
